Grieg and Friends: Piano Music by Philip Mandel
A Concert Supporting Free Music at TOC
Longtime TOC supporter and pianist Philip Mandel returns for an afternoon of Grieg and friends, sharing music he loves while helping keep live music free and accessible at The Old Church Concert Hall.
Philip began piano lessons at the ripe age of five and soon outgrew the neighborhood teachers near his New York-area home. At ten, he began studying with Polish concert pianist Adam Kapuscinski, who took him from simplified versions of Clair de lune and Für Elise to Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto in just two years. Since moving to Portland in 1985, Philip has performed solo recitals and played weddings, holiday parties, and other gatherings. Once so shy he couldn't perform in front of his cat, Philip now can't wait to get in front of an audience and bring music to life.
This concert also celebrates something close to Philip's heart: keeping music accessible to everyone. TOC's Free Lunchtime Concerts, a Portland tradition for nearly 60 years, expand this September from two to three Wednesdays each month as we work toward a return to a weekly schedule. Our free outdoor September Sessions bring even more music into the heart of downtown.
Admission is free, and donations are welcome. All gifts support free music at TOC.
