Started by Holly Renee Allen and Susan Munson, Neon Angels began as a festival honoring women’s voices. This strong collective of songwriters and musicians is disrupting the status quo again. “Neon Angels on the Porch” features Holly Renee and Susan with special guests Jules Kresky and Gina Sobel.
Holly Renee Allen
Raised at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Holly Renee Allen is the embodiment of the Red Dirt and Appalachian Soul from which she emerged. Allen was born and bred from generations of country and bluegrass musicians, raised on The Beatles, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt and The Rolling Stones. Her song writing is rich, vibrant, shot straight from the heart. She has lived and performed throughout the southeast and made a name for herself in songwriter circles in Nashville, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia. Calling the Shenandoah Valley home again, she is currently performing with The Road Dawgs and working on new songs about hometown places.
Atlanta's Martin Kearns says, “Holly Allen is one of the most enchanting artists I’ve worked with. She manages to combine a sincere innocence with the maturity of a full-grown woman. It is not possible to hear her and remain untouched by her spirit.” With a voice real and as honest as they come, Holly Renee Allen delivers Americana soul. Her songs are rich and vibrant, lyrically intelligent... "Southernese."
Susan Munson
Charlottesville-based Singer/Songwriter, Rock ‘n’ Roller, Susan Munson writes the songs that she hears on the wind and in her soul. They demand to be written and performed for others to enjoy. Many of her songs have a bluesy, fun feel with vocals infused with love and a breath of fresh air. Others lean into country, making her rich voice evoke the soul of Emmylou Harris and the prose of John Prine.
A prolific songwriter, Susan has released 3 CDs of original songs, Promise on the Moonrise, Halfway to Anywhere, and Missing. She can’t wait to get back into the studio to record more songs that she has written.
Susan also involves herself in many musical projects. Mojo Pie plays eclectic covers and showcases her original songs. Mama Tried plays a mix of early Grateful Dead songs and rockin’ band originals. And then she does the jam band thing in the Grateful Dead cover band, Alligator.
Jules Kresky
Jules’ songs emerge from the dreamy and dusky corners of her inner world. Vulnerable and melancholy yet funky and sassy, she is not quite jazz, funk, R&B or pop - but somewhere where these tryst. Jules invites the listener in and bewitchingly delivers the evocative stories and emotion in her writing. Her performances are raw and intimate, topped off with her whimsical yet sultry vocals, passionately and poetically sharing her story.
Gina Sobel
Gina Sobel is a natural improviser. Accomplished on multiple instruments (flute, sax, voice), she radiates energy and excitement in her live performances and is sought after as a soloist with national and international performers. She is an award-winning songwriter and composer; in her own music, Sobel brings together elements of funk, jazz and American folk music into a fresh and compelling sound.
Sobel is the bandleader of Choose Your Own Adventure, a high-energy funk band featuring a brilliant group of musicians. She is active in genres across the spectrum, ranging from hip-hop to bluegrass and everything in between.
