[In person only! No livestream!]
In pubs and social halls throughout Ireland (as well as in England, Scotland, and Wales) you will find what are called folk clubs. Somewhat akin to open mics, these are groups of friends and neighbors who get together on a regular basis to share songs and enjoy each other's company. Often a folk club invites a featured guest performer for part of the evening. That is what PVC will do tonight, with County Cork native Donie Carroll performing a 40-minute featured guest set. Otherwise members of the audience can sign up to lead one song each. It does not have to be Irish. Traditional songs, especially songs with choruses or refrains for group singing, are especially welcome. Feel free to sing a cappella, or bring an acoustic instrument to accompany yourself. This is an all-acoustic event, so there will be no sound system. Sorry, we do not serve pints of Guinness, but coffee and tea will be available.
A singer, guitarist, and actor originally from County Cork, Donie Carroll has long been a fixture on the New York Irish music scene. Together with the late fiddler Andy McGann, Donie anchored the long running and internationally famous Saturday night music session at the former Kate Kearney's pub. Donie has also been a stalwart with NYU's Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra. In addition, he founded the highly regarded Sunnyside Folk Club in Queens, now in its eleventh year.
