This is an American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding Recertification Course to give participants who are currently certified in American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding (Water up to 5, 6, or 7 feet) the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding certification.   

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Shallow Water Lifeguarding (Water up to 6 ft) with CPR AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, valid for 2 years.

Course Format and Requirements:  Online Course + Classroom / Swimming Pool Instruction.  After registering here, participant will recieve a registration confirmation email with instructions for accessing the online course. The online course content is designed to be completed in approximately 6 hours, with each module taking between 15 and 30 minutes to complete. Student may require more or less time to complete each module. This takes the place of 6 extra hours of classroom instruction time.  Student must complete all of the assigned online course modules prior to the start of the class.

Prerequisites:

To register for this course, participant must hold a current certification, or expired by no more than 30 days prior to the day of the recertification course, in American Red Cross Lifeguarding that included training in water 5, 6, or 7 feet deep. 

To participate in the course, you must be able to pass a prerequisite swimming skills evaluation, which includes two parts and takes place during the in-person session.

 ■ Prerequisite 1: Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 50 yards continuously; maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading, floating or a combination of both; then swim 50 more yards. When swimming, you must keep your face in the water and demonstrate good breath control. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed. When treading, if the maximum water depth is greater than 5 feet, you must tread water using only your legs. If the maximum water depth is less than or equal to 5 feet, you may tread water using only your legs, float or use a combination of the two. 

 ■ Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 50 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive (head-first or feet-first) to a depth of 4 to 7 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted. Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.  

Participant will be required to provide proof of identity and current certification card.

Instructor Bio:
Course instructor, Tukz Taaca, is co-owner of Safety First CPR & Safety Training, LLC and has an extensive background in aquatic safety. With 25+ years of experience, he has taught swim lessons and lifeguard certification courses through a variety of systems such as the American Red Cross, Ellis & Associates and the YMCA. He has taught for such organization as The Walt Disney World Company and the YMCA of Florida's First Coast. He currently teaches STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathmatics) at Duval Charter School at Flagler Center K-8. Come learn under one of the best!

4. Complete your online course. IT MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO YOUR IN-PERSON COURSE OR YOU MAY NOT ATTEND. 

5. Practice your physical skills as listed above under Prerequisites. Those will be tested in the water first on the first day.

Refund policy:
We have a strict cancellation / refund policy due to the high demand for these classes. They usually sell out and there are usually people on our wait list. The base price fee of the course is refundable under the terms below.  The registration fees are non-refundable.

If you cancel:
March 20, 2026 or prior - Fully refundable minus the registration fees. 
Between March 21 - 26, 2026, 75% refund. 
Between March 27-29, 2026, 50% refund. 
Between March 30-31, 2026, 25% refund. 
On or after April 1, 2026, non-refundable.
