Despite the Montana namesake, Gallatin Canyon makes their home in Charlottesville, Virginia, where the band was founded in 2011. True to their Virginia roots, the band is known for traditional bluegrass music with a unique and modern sensibility. Nodding to the bluegrass past with a traditional spin, Gallatin is also known for rebooting tunes from both the classic country and classic rock genres. From Flatt & Scruggs and Bill Monroe, to Johnny Cash and the Grateful Dead, at any given show, you can expect to hear a vibrant, eclectic blend crossing multiple musical genres.
Since their formation in 2012, Ragged Mountain String Band has engaged audiences at countless concerts and festival stages like the Festy, the Richmond Bluegrass Festival, and Red Wing Roots, where they play as the festival’s square dance band. With four full-length albums to their name, the five-piece outfit specializes in Appalachian string band music while playing barn-burning breakdowns, swinging rags, and classic Stanley Brothers tunes–harmonies and all. Although they appeal to roots music and string band lovers, RMSB doesn’t confine themselves to any one genre. At a show you can hear them cover a range of music from the Clash to the Grateful Dead to Taj Mahal.
The Rivanna Roots concert series would not be possible without the support of our premier season sponsor Flow Automotive of Charlottesville, and our supporting sponsors Sun Tribe Solar and Martin Horn Inc. A special thank you to our food and beverage partners, Potter’s Craft Cider, Champion Brewing Co, Blenheim Vineyards, and Sticks Kebob Shop. We also thank Virginia is for Lovers and CACVB for their continuous support of all that we do at The Front Porch!
