About the Event

Silverstage Theatre Company is proud to present Henrik Ibsen's A DOLL'S HOUSE. This holiday themed production runs December 19th and 20th at the historic Starline Factory, bring Ibsen's crowning dramatic achievement to life in a new, original context. This radio play adaptation is staged for a live audience, and features live holiday music and an available cash bar!

In classic Silverstage fashion, this production is uniquely set in a 1940s radio station, with the glitz and glam of the mid-twentieth century providing an entirely new contextualization of this classic. These 1940s radio performers are well accustomed to holiday cheer, but what happens when they tackle a story of power, sacrifice, autonomy, and secrets? Henrik Ibsen clashes these themes with the holiday spirit of Christmas eve, and the end result is a deliciously triumphant and sometimes devastating story.

A Doll's House tells the story of Nora and Torvald Helmer, a husband and wife enjoying Christmas in the late 1870s. Their happy cookie-cutter lives may not be all as they seem. Nora exists in a world dominated by the men around her, with little opportunity for a self-fulfilling life. Torvald loves his wife dearly, but his carefully constructed and controlling life contains a fragile balance between image and reality.

Upon release in 1879, Henrik Ibsen's play was received with an uproar of controversy, pre-dating all organized first wave feminism where it was written in Norway. It's not an exaggeration to say it changed storytelling as we know it.

Content warning: While all ages are welcome, some intense thematic material covering topics of marital discourse and misogyny may be mature for younger audiences. Parental discretion advised.

Directed by Hunter Johnson and Nathan S. Forrester, and stage managed by Erin Liston, the production features Gianah Tomczak as Nora and Hunter Johnson as Torvald, as well as a brilliant ensemble of local talent, including Kristina Drendel, Max Saunders, Nathan S. Forrester, and Jackie Schiro as our Featured Soloist. A Doll's House: A Live Radio Play will run Friday December 19th at 7:00pm, and Saturday, December 20th at 3:00pm and 7:00pm.
