Celebrate the first night of Chanukah with music from two all-star klezmer quintets – the Carpathian-Pacific Express and the Warm Hearts Klezmer Ensemble! Bring your Chanukah menorah and light candles with family and friends, sing holiday songs, and enjoy homemade latkes.
The Carpathian-Pacific Express is a thrilling exploration of neo-klezmer and beyond – a musical journey through the rich traditions of klezmer, Yiddish song, mystical Hasidic chant, and Eastern European fiddle tunes, with infusions of American roots and deep groove. Led by singer/clarinetist Jack (Yankl) Falk, with Andrew Ehrlich (violin), Ralph Huntley (keys), Ji Tanzer (drums), and Courtney Von Drehle (accordion/sax), the Carpathian-Pacific Express builds upon a rich blend of musical influences – jazz, classical, folkloric, and improvisation – to energize and inspire new and old fans alike.
Warm Hearts Klezmer Ensemble is a brand new all-star group of Portland musicians put together especially for this Chanukah celebration! This is their first performance and it may be their last, so don't miss the celebration! Led by fiddler and singer Alicia Jo Rabins, with Rachel Blumberg (drums), Rachel Brashear (keys), Mary-Sue Tobin (clarinet) and Aaron Tomasko (upright bass), the Warm Hearts will rock classic klezmer tunes, Yiddish pop songs from the 1930's, at least one Ladino song about lost love, and maybe some Leonard Cohen covers for good measure.
