For the 11th season, IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild tours the American West. Mountain tops, old-growth forests, and sunny meadows replace the traditional concert hall in the series featuring pianist Hunter Noack on a 9-foot Steinway concert grand piano. Listen through wireless headphones and wander afield with the music as a soundtrack to your experience in the wild.
About this Landscape
Set at the edge of the Alvord Desert in southeastern Oregon, Alvord Hot Springs sits beneath the eastern flank of Steens Mountain, where sagebrush hills give way to an expansive dry lakebed and open sky. Owned and operated by local ranchers Paul and Toni Davis, the springs occupy a remote landscape defined by scale, quiet, and wide skies.
The IN A LANDSCAPE concert takes place on a hillside above the springs, with wide views across the desert and surrounding terrain.
Following the performance, guests may choose to add a communal dinner featuring locally raised Alvord Ranch beef, served on site.
This is an extremely remote location. All-wheel-drive vehicles are strongly recommended for the long, unpaved access roads. The nearest fuel is available 23 miles south in Fields or 106 miles north in Burns.
Access to the concert site requires either a steep quarter-mile uphill walk on an unpaved dirt trail or a shuttle ride from the parking area. The terrain is rugged and not suitable for wheelchairs or those with mobility challenges.
This concert takes place on the ancestral homelands of the Northern Paiute people. Indigenous communities connected to this land today include the Burns Paiute, Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Klamath Tribes, Fort McDermitt Paiute, and Shoshone peoples.
