About the Event

For the 11th season, IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild tours the American West. Mountain tops, old-growth forests, and sunny meadows replace the traditional concert hall in the series featuring pianist Hunter Noack on a 9-foot Steinway concert grand piano. Listen through wireless headphones and wander afield with the music as a soundtrack to your experience in the wild.

ABOUT THE LAKE COUNTY WEEKEND EXPERIENCE
For the first time, IN A LANDSCAPE presents a weekend experience in Lake County, Oregon, Hunter’s home away from home. The mini-series begins Friday night beneath dark skies at Summer Lake Hot Springs, continues Saturday afternoon at PLAYA Arts and Science Residency, and concludes Sunday afternoon at Fort Rock State Natural Area. These sites sit within a vast high desert landscape at the northwest edge of the Great Basin, shaped by long distances, open land, and a deep sense of quiet—one of Oregon’s most remote regions.

ABOUT FORT ROCK CONCERT, MUSEUM VISIT, & PIE SOCIAL

Concert at Fort Rock
Sunday afternoon’s concert takes place within the volcanic caldera of Fort Rock State Natural Area, formed by eruptions beneath what was once an inland sea. Wave action carved caves into the tuff ring, where anthropologist Luther Cressman uncovered 10,000-year-old sandals in 1938 in this ancestral homeland of the Northern Paiute, Klamath, and Modoc peoples.
This is one of the most physically demanding concert sites in the IN A LANDSCAPE series. Access to the concert requires a quarter-mile uphill hike from the parking area along a steep, rocky path. The concert site is set among sagebrush on uneven terrain, with no shade available.
Pre-Concert Museum Visit
Guests are encouraged to arrive early for a visit to the Fort Rock Valley Historical Homestead Museum, included with concert admission. The museum features a collection of original homestead-era buildings—including a church, schoolhouse, cabins, and homes—arranged in a small village setting that reflects early settlement in the Fort Rock Valley.
Fort Rock Pie Social
Following the concert, guests are invited to continue the afternoon at the Fort Rock Grange for the fourth annual Pie Social. Pie and ice cream will be available for a $5 suggested donation, with proceeds supporting the Fort Rock Grange and its community programs. Guests are welcome to bring a pie to share.
Access & Arrival Notes
Fort Rock is a remote community located approximately 38 miles southeast of La Pine, Oregon. Parking at the site is extremely limited, and carpooling is strongly encouraged. Many guests should expect to park along the entry road, with up to a half-mile walk to the parking area. A drop-off zone will be available for guests, chairs, and picnic items.
A limited shuttle will be available for guests with mobility challenges; however, the terrain at the concert site remains uneven and exposed.

ABOUT WEEKEND LODGING
For a complete south central Oregon experience, we are partnering with both PLAYA and Summer Lake Hot Springs to offer 2-night lodging packages for concert-goers. Information and reservation links for cabins, RV sites, and camping can be found on our Lake County Lodging page. Concert tickets are not included in lodging pricing and must be selected separately on this and the other concert pages.
