Amythyst Kiah’s upcoming album Still + Bright, produced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Green Day, Weezer) in Nashville, delves deeply into her spiritual and emotional interior. Building on the alt‑roots-rock foundation of her 2021 breakthrough Wary + Strange—which appeared on Rolling Stone’s Best Americana Albums list and earned her a Grammy nod for “Black Myself”—Kiah pushes into darker, more cinematic realms. The album juxtaposes fuzzed guitars, industrial drums, and shimmering pedal steel with her graceful banjo, marking a bold evolution in her sound.
The album opens with “Play God and Destroy the World,” featuring S.G. Goodman. Inspired by a high‑school talent‑show song, it critiques hypocrisy and explores hope found in unexpected philosophies like the humanistic sci‑fi of The Matrix. On “S P A C E,” a contemplative piece partly written on banjo, she reflects on pandemic‑era self‑identity and newfound stillness. “Meditation became an important part of my life,” she says, and the song pairs soulful vocals with mandolin and fiddle. Kiah intentionally expanded her vocal range here, embracing gospel‑style intensity.
Tracks like “I Will Not Go Down” root their narrative in historical violence—specifically, the Crusades. Featuring Billy Strings, the song channels personal empowerment through a stomping folk epic. “Silk and Petals” channels gothic love and loss, inspired by The Haunting of Bly Manor and the Lady in the Lake myth, blending feverish guitar and haunting rhythms.
Kiah co-wrote with artists including Tim Armstrong, Sadler Vaden, Avi Kaplan, and Sean McConnell, embracing collaboration in ways she hadn’t before. She describes relearning songwriting from a place of joy and wellness rather than trauma.
Still + Bright continues Kiah’s mission: to encourage misfits and seekers. Her music remains a vessel for healing, urging listeners to embrace unconventional paths and prioritize emotional truth. This album is both a personal exorcism and a guiding light—candid, courageous, and deeply resonant.
